Discernment Guide

God’s plan unfolds
with your choices.

Discernment is not about uncovering a secret plan God is hiding from you. God is not waiting for you to solve a riddle before He can lead you.
He guides you as you draw close to Jesus, pray honestly, seek counsel, and make faithful choices.

What is Discernment?

Discernment is
not standing still.

Many people think discernment means waiting until the answer becomes perfectly clear before making a move.

However, clarity more often comes through the steps you take.

God’s will is not something He hides from you. He leads as you pray, grow in holiness, pay attention to desire, seek counsel, and make real choices in faith.

A better question may not be, “What secret plan am I supposed to uncover?”

It may be:

When I am close to Jesus, what kind of life am I being drawn toward?

The Process

What should I pay
attention to?

You do not need perfect certainty to begin discerning priesthood, but there are signs that the question may be worth taking seriously.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I desire deeper intimacy with Jesus?
  • Am I drawn to prayer, Mass, confession, or Eucharistic adoration?
  • Do I want to serve Christ by serving His Church?
  • Can I imagine giving my life for others as a spiritual father?
  • Has the thought of priesthood stayed with me, even when I try to push it away?
  • Have people I trust encouraged me to consider it?

None of these things prove you are called to priesthood, but they may be signs that the question is worth exploring.

Discernment

A simple way to
begin.

Pray honestly

Ask Jesus what He wants, and be willing to listen.

Stay close to the sacraments.

Mass and confession help you hear more clearly.

Spend time in silence.

Eucharistic adoration can reveal what noise often hides.

Pay attention to desire.

Not every desire is a vocation, but holy desires matter.

Talk to someone wise.

You are not meant to figure this out alone.

This is not a checklist you have to complete before reaching out. These are simply ways to begin listening.

You don’t need certainty before you take a step.

If priesthood has been on your mind, even quietly, a first conversation can help you name what’s there.

Reaching out is not an application to seminary or a decision to become a priest. It’s simply a place to ask the question and receive guidance.
